13.Truman Show

Retrieved, December 31, 2009 from

http://thecia.com.au/reviews/t/images/truman-show-4.jpg

Actually today there were two presentations about movies. One of them is “The Truman Show” another one is “The Full Monty”. “The Full Monty” actually very unusual and funny movie actually when I compare to “Truman Show” but because of I watched “Truman Show” a few years ago I will make a comment on that. Its’ screenplay is very good. Actually it gets Oscar about this category. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120382/awards.

I think that Truman’s trying for going to new life or escaping from studio maybe can be liken to or representative of audience’s not avoiding from reality TV. Since as we can see from the movie everybody, even they are in the work, they leave everything and trying to watch this show. It says to us you could not escape from these kind of shows. As Rushide mentions one of his texts.

Because I only remember from competition was our presentation story which is “A woman on a roof” or maybe it takes my attention because of we prepared presentation on this. Finally I congratulate everybody for this good competition .

11.Marked Woman

Retrieved , December 15 ,2009 from:
http://tarlton.law.utexas.edu/lpop/advocat/marked.jpg

I want to mention 2-3 interesting points in the article called “Marked Woman”. First one is about chromosomes since until these years I learned that two Y chromosomes determined the sex which person become male or female. However in this article YY chromosome does not do anything. Moreover another thing which interests me is that Mrs and Miss issue. Before I read this article I have thought it is a bad thing for woman a marked by married or not. Also women do not have to announce everybody being married or not. Woman can use her surname although she is married. Thanks to Turkish legislation woman can use also their surnames. It should like this because everybody knows you with your name and surname. It is the same thing with changing your initial name with another name after 30 years :)

10. Comments on Presantation

On the previous Thursday me and my group members (Burak and Yavuzalp) make presentation on the article which is called “ A woman on a roof”. I want to share my opinions about our presentation. I think we missed some crucial points while we were preparing presentation such as we much emphasise on writer’s private life rather than her views of literature. Moreover we can add historical backgrounds about period when it was written. When I remembered my first presentation in prep school I was very excitement but in year I get used to it. When we are look at audience comments we see many of them like the covered picture, that woman sitting on roof, I think it is reason for that because of beautiful woman :) .If I find time to watch “V for Vendetta” for the second presentation we will start preparing it. . If I make critics other groups I think all of three were very good especially for the context of presentation. I hope everybody make better presentations for the second one :)

9.Being Woman in Turkey

http://img167.imageshack.us/img167/963/evol2lp8.jpg

I liked this picture it is very interesting and it really suits our subject :)

Actually when I first read the Global Gender Gap Report (2009) I was very disappointed.Since Turkish woman gained the rights before other countries but unfortunately we could not conserve our location. From the Ottoman Empire woman has got behind with men. In these years they had no right to go to school, they could not work and their only duties look after their children and do housework. These things unfortunately continue some parts of the Turkey. Little girls do not allow to go school infect they are forced to marry man it does not matter they are 10 or 11 years old. Fathers have the authority over their girls until they get married. After the marriage these authority passed to her husband. If the woman could not gain their rights such as divorce, they are exposed to violence from their husbands. However most of the woman due to the fact that not having jobs they could not divorce from their husband because they need their husband’s money. Maybe that’s why the man usually show their aggression or masculinity to woman because they know woman have to be dependent themselves. However there are also other women who both earn money and be exposed violence from husband. We can read these things from the newspaper everyday. One man killed his wife, or girl’s brother killed girl because of she talked with a man .These things occur in Turkey maybe because of majority of people’s conservative ideas and this is caused by Islam religion.

8.Television in Turkey

In the article called as “Television: the plug-in drug” mentioned about television affects on American families. Generally I realised that we have the same problem as Turkish families. Firstly, when television invented it was very expensive. If people do not have their television they went their friends’ house or neighbour or families in order to watching television. This leads to very good social environment. Due to the fact that there is only one television channel there is no argument among adults or children about who watch what :) . This is very good .However I observed that these days there are hundreds of channel and generally most of the houses may have the more than 2 television. Thus, family members watch television their own room and they do not have any information about what did they today. They use their house only for watching TV and having a meal rather than sharing their emotion and life. Television affects children in a bad way. I observed one thing from my cousin. He was very concentrated to TV program and although I called his name hundreds times he didn’t hear me until the advertisements began. This is makes me very annoyed :) . In order to prevent children watching TV too much, family members also do not watch TV too much. They can play games with their children or they can organise reading hours for every members of family.

7. Killing Us Softly

http://english.orange021.com/upload/thumb/fotoPariOpp_1.jpg

In turkey advertisements usually are not based on sexualise maybe because of moral issues. There can be woman in advertisement but not like the advertisements America doing. Woman usually looks very thin and teenagers also want to be like them. Thus, in order to not put on weigh they have eating disorder called
anorexia nervosa. I remember this ill from Mary Kate Olsen from the news. Not only woman like be thin they also want to be have large breast because they wants endear to men. Also magazines force women by mentioning ways for endearing men or men likes what so women started to apply these things. Even they do not avoid having a surgery. Usually advertisement putting on television especially there is a woman who doing housework, cooking or dealing with their children. Why there is not any man figure in these advertisements? Since many people see housework associated with woman. However we can see man in advertisements of car because car issue interests men. I do not know who determine the advertisement man or woman act on which types of advertisement but I can make guess. I think this begins with the childhood. Since children’s toys are determined with their gender. Boys usually not played with dolls and girls are usually not played with cars. Generally this affects their duties when they grow up.
One interesting thing is women and men shown differently in advertisements. Women shown as vulnurable, passive or just smiling wheares men show thier masculanity by looking more strong, more aggressive. This starts with very early ages little boys or little girls do the same thing as well girls hands’ over her mouth.I have not noticed that until Jean Kilbourne talked about this issue.

6.Mask and Toy

In the previous week we watched a film called “Tough Guise”. When I first saw the title of film I thought guise might be mean plural of guy. However it means appearance of something intended to deceive. It really good title because one part of the film Mark McGuire shown as crying and this show us men also can be vulnerable. Also shows men in real life situation when their mask is removed.

Another think which I found interesting is toys appearance. I didn’t know toys appearance can be changed these changes can be visible. To illustrate Barbie became thinner whereas boys’ toys arms became stronger and thick. I have realised that Barbie changed when I compared to my Barbies but these changes only contains their faces. (I think they look ugly :) because their head become bigger.) However in this film shows toys changed radically. This is done in order to influence children. This appearance supported by media because it shows thin models in magazines and strongest man especially in the films as a good thing. Since children started to imitate this toys and want to be seen like them. Thus, girls started to do diet and boys want to go gym. We can understand that how media influence both children and toys.

5. what I have learned so far?

When I quickly think what I learned from this course so far there are many things come up with my mind. I have already known how to do in text citation in prep class however doing citation in APA format it is totally new concept for me. Recently I learn a new thing in today’s lesson class was citation have to be used for images. It is very easy but it is take a little time to prepare references. Lastly I want to mention about our blogs. This concept also new for me. I have never use blog until that year. It is a bit challenge to write every week but I gradually realise its benefits in terms of improvements in my writing skills.

4. Are these people crazy?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0NkfWkJGyOI

I want to share this video to illustrate how reality tv shows become terrible :S

I have never understood how these people do such things although they can earn millions.

Also I could not believe how they eat spiders whereas I can hardly watch them. They abase themselves eating unknown things. I want to point out another view of its effects in terms of contestant’s relations between their colleagues. Their colleagues might recognize him as what they saw in TV and they judge them differently. In addition to this contestant’s children see their mother father as eating insects and they want to imitate them. Of course not only contestant’s children in danger this result also affect audience’s children.

3.Paparazzi

While I was reading Patricia Holland article is about photography the term “paparazzi” caught my eye .Since this term is still popular and media also talk about this issue I want to mention about it. As Patricia Holland says when famous people want to be on view, photographers behave unadulterated publicist create alluring and flattering images however when famous people do not want to be taken photo or want to be private, photographer turn out to be invasive stalkers and they do not leave them until they can take a picture.

I know that paparazzi’s duty is taking photo of celebrities but sometimes they go over the limit. They ask questions again and again or they sometimes follow them until celebrities get in their houses. Paparazzi’s continue the same behaviour until they be slapped by celebrities. However maybe they wait for this to make an interesting news .Such as ‘blabla who is celebrities slapped our publicist.’ But when they prepare this news they do not think what they did do to make these people angry. Princes Diana died while she was escaping paparazzi, maybe they do not want to consider themselves as responsible for this accident.

2.Camera lenses as our eyes

We have already known that newspapers for reading. However most of people prefer to glance at just photographs rather than reading in detail. (Maybe they take the easy way out.) Thus, to be reflecting the truth news and to be understood them clearly, photographs should be very objective. In my view, news' detail can be distorted or changed according to writer but photographs can be quite clear to explain the event. I like the way that photographer Kent Gavin explains ideas about professionalism: ' I consider my camera to be a window through which the public can look at the world. Sometimes they will be entertained, sometimes they will be horrified and provoked into action some kind...' and I think this window or camera lenses liken to represent our eyes even we are not where the event occupying. They should not be very pink or very black. It only shows us what the real is.

1.Reality TV

Concept of reality TV firstly appears in 1940's. However in 2000's it has widespread popularity among most of the countries. As we know that most popular ones are ‘Big Brother’, ‘Survivor’, ‘American Idol’, and ‘Fear Factor’ in American television. Due to the fact that reality programmes topped the ratings, Turkish channels also bring out them. This brings out term which is voyeurism. Watching reality shows seems to be only watching TV but it turns out to peeping ordinary people since people do not mind constant having a bath or sleeping.

Why do people watch these programs despite the fact that there are lots of strangers in these programs? Maybe it is related to arouse curiosity so people can not avoid watching and gossip about them after the day or maybe they want to watch these people to find something which is in common so they do not feel alone about it anymore. Also usually people like making criticism even if they do not know anything about these constants or even it doesn’t interest them. All of these notions lead to continuousness of reality shows. I hope channels find really different concept from that we can get rid of it :)
