14. practise essay

I tried to write an essay considering this question.

Apply the concepts in the texts by Kilbourne, Lessing and Tannen to your culture and analyse which motives could be behind these concepts with reference to your own experience.
But I also use "tough guise" as an source because it will also in the exam texts.

Culture and media are the main motivation when we apply three concepts from two article and two movies when we apply them to Turkish culture.

Turkish culture comes from Ottoman Empire. Before the republic of Turkey woman’s position in society is seen unimportant. Since woman do not have right to vote, go to school or working. This situation might be seen in some parts in Turkey especially Eastern part. In turkey there are woman whose income only depends on their husband and they could not gain their independence. So that reason men might easily show their masculinity towards woman because men may think their wives depended themselves. Sometimes majority of men see the same situation from his fathers. They think it is very normal think to behave their wife’s as an object. Woman’s role in the house only looks after children and doing housework. Another motivation is take role in here. It is media. According to Kilbourne woman are seen in advertisement as a doing housework, looking after children (1999). Both with the help of media and culture men see woman as working at home.

Woman and men are shown in media in a different way. When we make comparison between men and woman especially in the advertisement we realise some main differences. However in Turkish culture advertisement can be more conservative than American in usually in Turkish advertisement there are happy family who come together and having meal. I know that there are also advertisement which woman have role in but it is too much. However there are other advertisements especially Kilbourne says, woman shown as thin, sexy and they have to have larger breast. In these advertisement woman have to be beautiful whereas when we look at “Tough Guise” men usually shown as masculine like in the Marlboro cigarettes advertisement (2000). So that reason media determine men and woman’s behaviour. Girls and boys take a model of these advertisement figures so they may do everything in order to be like them. This is usually comes from in the very early ages. According to “Tough Guise” in these advertisement toys can be differentiate time to time. For instance, Barbies become thinner whereas boys’ toys become stronger and have large arms. So that children think it is good to be look like their toys (2000). In turkey there are some magazines which gives information about how influence boys, how look like thinner. These articles influence teenagers’ ideas. Kilbourne says (1999) in order to be looking thinner many girls have diseases called anorexia. Since media have a huge impact on them.

Women are used as an sexual object for many advertisement. This is done due to the fact that woman are marked both in the world and Turkey. Tannen claim that clothes, make up, hair shoes which woman wear all of them can be different. So they make woman marked whereas men’s cloth hair is unmarked (1993). When we think of turkey in that concept woman also marked. For instance every year there are celebration for coming new year at Taksim square but every year there are lots of men who behave woman especially foreign woman in a offensive way. So in here woman are marked. This also come from reason of cultural and media. Media because as in “tough guise” said men are tough, strong masculine whereas Kilborne says woman are more sexy (1999). So they see woman as a sexual object they think because of their power they have right to do what they want to woman even it’s offensive. This concept also related to another article which is “a woman on a roof”. Here is also there are masculine tough men who are looking at a sexy woman. Because of woman are marked, different from man they may think they have right to voyeur woman. In turkey this thing also happens. It is difficult to walking in mini skirt in the Istiklal Street because men whistle and they say offensive words.

If we analysing all four concept from different articles and movies we can realise there are some relations between them. This relationship caused by the media and culture issues. Here men and woman differences easily can be seen.
